1. Accounts & Access

  • Collect administrator credentials (Microsoft 365/email, Domain registrar/DNS, Server & PC local admin, Firewall/router/switch, Wi‑Fi, VPN).
  • Obtain logins for backup systems (cloud and local).
  • Retrieve password vault or credential manager (if used).

2. Documentation & Infrastructure

  • Obtain network diagram and device inventory (servers, PCs, printers, routers, switches).
  • Collect software license keys (Windows, Office, Adobe, legal apps like Clio, Westlaw, LexisNexis).
  • Verify backup schedule and policies (frequency, retention, testing).
  • Review and document security policies (MFA, password policy, compliance requirements).
  • Request list of current support tickets or unresolved issues.

3. Hardware & Systems

  • Confirm hardware inventory (PCs, server, backup drive, printers).
  • Test all systems for current patches/updates, antivirus active, and storage health (server & backup drive).
  • Verify printers are properly configured on the network.

4. Security & Compliance

  • Confirm encryption is enabled (laptops, server, backup).
  • Verify email security (spam filtering, phishing protection).
  • Check alignment with ABA data protection standards.
  • Ensure audit trails are enabled for sensitive data.

5. Disaster Recovery

  • Verify backup restorability (perform a test restore).
  • Establish disaster recovery procedures (server failure, cybersecurity incident, natural disaster/power outage).
  • Document RTO (Recovery Time Objective) and RPO (Recovery Point Objective).

6. Day‑One Priorities

  • Ensure all backups are current and secure.
  • Confirm antivirus and updates are active across all devices.
  • Validate secure remote access for attorneys and staff.
  • Document all new credentials and configurations in secure storage.
